Futuristic February - Reducing Waste

Do you ever wonder how much waste you create in a day? In a month? Well, there's a challenge by @sustainable_duo that is about to start called Futuristic February. Throughout the month of February, you must save all the non-perishable waste (this includes recycled materials) that you make. At the end of the month, take a picture of it all and post it using the hashtag #FuturisticFebruary. Does thinking about keeping all your trash for a full month make you want to vomit? Well, maybe that's a sign that you need to find ways to reduce your waste. This post will contain some easy ideas that you can start to apply and add to your routine, so that by the end of the month, you have almost nothing to show. Firstly, what do you even throw out? Think about it for a bit and try to see if any of these items can be recycled (cardboard, clean plastic, aluminum, etc.) or composted (food waste, paper towels, napkins, etc.) instead. If that's the case, then try to hold on to your waste...

Say yes to Bamboo!

What is Bamboo? I mean, sure, it's a plant. But why is it so good for the environment? Well, with a quick wiki search, you will learn that it is one of the fastest-growing plants in the world. The quickest tree can take ten years to grow to around 25 feet. Meanwhile, some bamboo plants can grow 36 inches or 9.1 cm each day. This means that after a single week, a bamboo plant can grow to 21 feet, which is almost equivalent to how tall the quickest tree would be after ten years . Trees are constantly being cut down and used but they do not grow fast enough to be replaced. Fortunately, bamboo is the solution to this problem. Bamboo is a sustainable source because of its ability to grow so quickly. You can chop it in half each day and it'll just keep growing in size. You won't be damaging the Earth by cutting it. In fact it needs get cut to continue thriving. Please keep in mind that the idea is not to replace everything you currently have with bamboo, but to gradually purc...

Groceries - Reducing plastic consumption

Am I the only one who gets anxious while grocery shopping? I mean, besides the insane amount of people rushing about, trying to get their groceries done, I look around and see tons of people buying or using items made of plastic. Unfortunately, we aren't close enough to completely escape plastic at the grocery store but there are many steps we can take to reduce the amount we purchase or use. One of the easiest changes we can make is to purchase some reusable bags. They don't cost much and can be found at any large grocery store. Make sure to bring some with you every time you go shopping, regardless of where you go. You can easily store them in your car or simply carry them with you if you are walking or taking public transportation. There are tons of different styles with different designs. Depending on what you're planning on buying, you can consider the following options: Thick bags with hard bottoms that can hold heavy groceries Tote bags for when you're only ...

New Year, Same Me

Hi! My name is Bianca Deltorto-Russell and I am a self-taught environmentalist. I do my own research and stay informed with ways to live a more sustainable life. Anyone who knows me personally will know that I try to find a way to discuss actions that people can take to be more sustainable all the time and I figured that I should find another outlet to relay this information. I have been wanting to start a blog for quite some time now and decided that 2020 was the year that this would come true. My goal is to write about changes that individuals can apply to their lives to reduce our collective negative impact on the environment. Some of my sustainability tips will relate to Montreal specifically and when that is the case I will mention it in the post. I would also like to mention that I will simply write about things that I have learned and use in my life, but if you have other ideas or better ways to do something, I definitely want to hear about it. This blog will include posts r...
